Everything you need to know about the race!
The theory behind this year’s race is: by entering your registration details on this website, you are allowed entry to the Grandstand. Everyone starts in the Grandstand. The way out of there is to complete, submit, and get approval for one of the Qualifier patterns, which puts you on the track as a racer.
Grandstand
If you cannot finish your Qualifier socks, submit your best effort when the last 36 hour window opens on the Google form for Best Effort. You will remain in the Grandstand. You do not earn points while in the Grandstand, but you will be granted a “second chance” to get into the racing oval. To do so you must complete within the given time frame, submit & get approval for a pair of Lap 1 socks. Submit via Google form titled SECOND CHANCE and you will re-join with your team. If you are in the Grandstand but unable to complete the lap 1 socks you will remain in the Grandstand. You will not receive any further patterns unless you exit the Grandstand.
Supersock World Championship Rules
The Supersock World Championship is a multi-lap speed knitting contest based loosely on famous auto and bicycle races. We like to think of it as a hybrid mix of Tour-de-Sock and Sock Madness. Sharing of your registration user info to give access to another person is against our fair play in racing concept and you will not be able to participate. Racers are required to remain alert and read the Announcements thread and all requirements/errata in pattern threads on the SWC group.
At the beginning of each lap new patterns are released on the website for Qualified racers to download.
Mods will mark the end of the lap with a double checkered flag on Ravelry, but racers may continue to post their finished socks for zero points.
Completion Process
Create a project page, complete with all the required photos in the correct orientation, and number of stitches cast on, NOT shoe size. – Fill out the Google form for FINISHERS (or Best Effort in the Qualifier) that will be linked in the header of the thread of your pattern you chose. This link when correctly completed supplies us with all the information.
Individual Competition
Points are awarded for laps 1-3 and the Finale. Points for each design in a lap are awarded separately (see Points System below). The fastest three contestants are awarded with podium places. Contestant points are accrued towards a team total.
Points are cumulative and are based on the finishing position for each lap. The individual winner of the Supersock World Championship will be the racer who accumulates the most points throughout the competition. In the event of a tie, the victor will be determined by average finishing position for all laps. Should a tie still exist, the winner will be determined by the number of lap victories. Should that still not break the tie, there will be a single sock knit-off.
Team Competition
Teams can be any size, but only the top 10 finishers of each team qualify for team points. In other words, only ten racers’ points will count towards final totals. The spreadsheet keeps track of individual racers and which team will receive the Team Cup at the end of the competition.
Points System
- 20 points for 1st Place
- 18 points for 2nd Place
- 16 points for 3rd Place
- 14 points for 4th-10th Place
- 12 points for 11th-50th Place
- 10 points for 51st-100th place
- 5 point for finished, but not placed
1 point – Any pair finished with accepted modification(s) these will be detailed in the Designer threads and minimum requirements.
1 point- Shorties are allowed in specific laps, (not the Qualifier or Second Chance racers). A pair of shorties must follow the original design if there is a fancy cuff, must have the same heel and toes, and the foot must be in pattern. Any bonus patterns may be adapted to shorties.
Prizes
All prizes are donated. If you would like to donate, please see the Prizes thread on Ravelry. If sufficient in numbers, a random drawing will be held from each lap’s finishers for prizes. All prizes will be distributed at the end of the competition. All prizes have been donated and are not secured via sponsors.
Solicitation
Do not use this group for solicitation or self-promotion. Have an item or yarn you’d like to promote? Please use the Ravelry thread, Retail Therapy.
